Mandarin Senior Club Kick-Off

IMG 2004

Information from Statistics Canada reveals that there are more than 30, 000 Mandarin-speaking seniors who are living in the vicinities of Chinatown in Downtown Toronto. Due to culture difference and language barriers, a lot of Mandarin-speaking seniors are less serviced by the community. As a result, fewer of these seniors are involved in social activities. With the funding support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Toronto Community &Culture Centre is bringing the “Information Hub For Mandarin-Speaking Seniors”commencing today. The Project primarily aims at building a joyful, relaxing and welcoming platform for seniors to gain optimistic mindset and interesting skills and hobbies. Through participation in the Project, seniors will be encouraged to walk out of their home to make friends and join community activities in a more frequent manner; and thus, allow them to getrid of loneliness; and eliminate their chances of getting depressed or mental disease or even committing suicide.

Toronto Community & Culture Centre (TCCC) will provide a new function room for the Project at its head office in Dundas and Spadina. Programs will include:

  1. Educationaland health programs such as information of social and financial support available for seniors; preventing & coping with senior common diseases bychoosing healthy and nutrition foodetc;
  2. Recreational and art programs like TaiChi, Chinese traditional painting, healthy walking, dancing, karaoke, gardening and floral arrangement etc;
  3. Neighborhood visits to seniors home, community centers, police/fire station, banks, government service agencies; health and nutrition centers, school and universities.

TCCC will work closely with other service organizationsfor successful implementation of this Project. Details and inquiries may be directed to Lily Liu at (416)971-7883.
